Storm Season Preparedness

Protecting Your Property and Your Wallet

By Traci Wiley, Wiley Insurance Agency, LLC

2025 started off with severe weather that impacted West Plains and neighboring areas. With tornado season peaking from April to June, it’s crucial to stay informed and prepared. Missouri averages 45 tornadoes annually, often accompanied by hail, 60+ mph winds, and lightning—resulting in millions in damages across the state.

Missouri ranks among the top 10 states for hail claims. These storms can total vehicles and cause significant roof damage. That’s why it’s important to understand how your policy handles wind and hail damage, especially when it comes to deductibles and roof settlement schedules.

Most homeowners policies include hail as a covered peril, but many now carry a separate wind/hail deductible—often a percentage (1-5%) of your dwelling’s insured value. If your roof is newer than 10 years, you might be eligible for discounts and reduced depreciation. Be sure to inform your agent if you’ve recently replaced your roof.

Flash flooding is Missouri’s leading cause of storm-related deaths. The phrase “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” is more than just a slogan—it’s a lifesaving reminder. Never cross moving water, as it endangers not only your life but also those of our first responders. If you rely on a volunteer fire department, make sure your membership dues are paid annually, as many insurance contracts require this for coverage validity.

In 2024, insured losses from natural disasters in the U.S. totaled $154 billion—a 27% increase over the 10-year average. Hurricanes accounted for $117 billion, and severe convective storms (SCS)—which include tornadoes and hail—contributed over $51 billion. SCS are more localized but increasingly frequent, often following similar paths through our region. Coupled with rising construction costs, these trends are pushing insurance premiums higher.

Storm Preparation & Policy Affordability Tips

  • Review your policy: Speak with your agent to understand your coverages, deductibles, and limits. Consider whether all structures and equipment are adequately insured.
  • Higher deductibles: Opting for a higher deductible can help lower your premium.
  • Bundle policies: Combine home and auto insurance for additional savings.
  • Emergency kit: Stock water, nonperishable food, flashlights, batteries, a first aid kit, weather radio, and essential documents.
  • Yard maintenance: Trim trees and clean gutters to reduce property damage from limbs and water overflow.
  • Get alerts: Sign up for notifications via the KY3 app, Howell County Emergency Management, and local emergency services’ Facebook pages.
  • Secure outdoor items: Bring in or anchor patio furniture, grills, and decor to prevent them from becoming projectiles.
  • Document everything: Take updated photos of your property and inventory your belongings. Save receipts for major purchases.

If storm damage occurs, contact your agent right away for the best course of action on filing a claim.
